In dieser neuen Serie von Josia Bancroft geht es um die “Hexologists”, ein Ehepaar das als eine Art Privatermittler mit magischen Fähigkeiten in einer alternativen Welt agiert. In dieser Welt ergänzt Magie Technik und umgekehrt, die Magie als solches ist in verschiedenen Klassen1 eingeteilt. Manche davon sind ausgestorben2, manche haben sich als zu gefährlich entpuppt und sind illegal und ggfls. im Untergrund. Es ist sehr unüblich dass eine einzelne Person in mehreren Kategorien bewandert ist3. Isolde Wilby, der eine Teil des Ehepaars, ist bewandert in Hexegy. Das Ehepaar ergänzt sich wunderbar.
Das ganze ist eine Mischung auf Mystery und urban Fantasy , mit einer Prise Humor gewürzt, die Welt wird sehr fantasiereich beschrieben. Bislang ist der erste Teil der Serie erschienen.

Der erste Teil der Serie. Eine sehr schöne Einführung in die Welt, humorvoll, detailliert und in den Grenzen der Welt durchaus realistisch. Und hat eine der interessantesten Anfänge die ich bislang gelesen habe, siehe das Zitat 👍(Und ähnlich wie Books of Babel (2013-2023)) klingt das erstmal surreal/bizarr, wird aber logisch und nachvollziehbar aufgelöst.)

“The king wishes to be cooked alive,” the royal secretary said, accepting the proffered saucer and cup and immediately setting both aside. At his back, the freshly stoked fire added a touch of theater to his announcement, though neither seemed to suit what, until recently, had been a pleasant Sunday morning.
“Does he?” Isolde Wilby gazed at the royal secretary with all the warmth of a hypnotist.
“Um, yes. He’s quite insistent.” The questionable impression of the royal secretary’s negligible chin and cumbersome nose was considerably improved by his well-tailored suit, fastidiously combed hair, and blond mustache, waxed into upturned barbs. Those modest whiskers struck Isolde as a dubious effort to impart gravity to a youthful face. Though Mr. Horace Alman seemed a man of perfect manners, he sat with his hat capping his knee. “More precisely, the king wishes to be baked into a cake.”
